HOW REBATES WORK

What Are LED Lighting Rebates?

Utility companies and state energy agencies offer financial incentives to businesses that reduce electricity consumption. LED retrofits are among the most rebate-eligible upgrades available.

Rebate programs vary by region, fixture type, and total energy savings achieved. In 2026, incentives are at historically high levels as regulators accelerate fluorescent phase-outs and carbon reduction targets. Starting sooner means capturing higher incentive values before programs reach capacity.

OUR PROCESS

We Handle Everything

01 — IDENTIFY
Rebate Identification

During your free site audit, we identify every rebate program available — local utility, state energy efficiency, and applicable federal incentives — cross-referenced against your fixture types and utility provider.

02 — APPLY
Pre-Approval Submission

Most programs require pre-approval before installation begins. We prepare and submit all pre-approval documentation on your behalf, securing your reservation before a single fixture is touched.

03 — SPECIFY
DLC-Compliant Products

We specify only DLC-listed and ENERGY STAR certified products — the qualification standard required by virtually all rebate programs. Every fixture we install is on the approved product list for your utility.

04 — COLLECT
Documentation & Submission

After installation, we compile all documentation — as-built fixture lists, product certifications, metered savings verification — and submit the complete application. We follow up through to payment.

PROGRAM TYPES

Rebate Programs We Work With

Incentives come from multiple sources. We identify and stack programs where possible to maximize your total offset.

Utility Prescriptive Rebates

Fixed dollar-per-fixture rebates from your local utility provider. The most common program type — available through most major utilities nationwide.

Custom / Performance Rebates

Calculated based on measured kWh reduction. Better for large projects where total energy savings are significant. Requires metered documentation — which we provide.

State Energy Programs

State-funded programs that supplement or replace utility rebates. Availability and amounts vary by state — we track current program status in all regions we serve.

Federal Tax Incentives (179D)

Commercial building owners may qualify for the Section 179D energy efficiency deduction. We document the project for deduction eligibility in coordination with your tax advisor.

On-Bill Financing

Some utilities offer financing repaid through your monthly bill — often with immediate net-positive cash flow because savings exceed the monthly payment.

Lighting as a Service

Zero upfront capital with rebates applied to reduce the service fee further. Immediate positive cash flow from day one. Learn more →

COMMON QUESTIONS

Rebate FAQ

Does my facility qualify for LED lighting rebates?
Most commercial and industrial facilities qualify for some form of rebate or incentive. Eligibility depends on your utility provider, facility type, current fixture types, and the LED products specified. The best way to find out is through our free site audit, where we identify all applicable programs for your specific location.
Do I need to apply for rebates before installation starts?
Yes — most utility rebate programs require pre-approval before installation begins. This is why Echelon handles rebate identification and pre-approval as part of the project planning phase, before any fixtures are ordered or installed. Starting without pre-approval can disqualify the project from rebate eligibility.
How long does it take to receive the rebate payment?
Most utility rebate payments are issued within 60–120 days of a completed and approved application. We track all submissions and follow up with utilities on your behalf through to payment receipt.
What does DLC-qualified mean?
DLC (DesignLights Consortium) is an independent certification organization that tests and lists high-efficiency lighting products. Most utility rebate programs require DLC-listed products to ensure the energy savings are genuine. We specify only DLC-qualified fixtures on every project.
